The Southwest Florida Fair opens Friday, Feb. 25, and, for those planning to attend on Monday, Feb. 28, can get free admission by donating nonperishable food. That night is designated as “Harry Chapin Food Bank Night.”
The food collected at the fair on Feb. 28 will be donated to the Harry Chapin Food Bank for distribution at no cost to its local nonprofit agencies. Last year, over 6,000 pounds of food was collected, along with $5,000, which provided an additional $30,000 in food to our community.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of more than 170 local nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, who provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly. Over 800,900 pounds of food are distributed monthly. For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community. In the past fiscal year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 11.5 million pounds of food and other grocery products.
