Voters approve straw ballot to balance U.S. budget
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida voters easily passed a nonbinding resolution that calls for amending the U.S. Constitution to require a balanced budget without raising taxes.
With 57 percent of the expected vote counted, more than 72 percent of voters favored the resolution that was placed on Tuesday’s ballot by the Legislature’s Republican majority. It dovetails with a resolution the Legislature passed this year to make Florida the 20th state to call for a constitutional convention for the purpose of passing such an amendment. It requires 34 states to call a constitutional convention and 38 to adopt an amendment.
Congress also has the power to propose constitutional amendments for ratification by the states.
