Family Health and Safety Fair Saturday

By Staff

The 4th annual Family Health and Safety Fair, which is sponsored by Heart and Soul Massage Therapy Day Spa and the Wellness Center of Cape Coral, will kick off a fun-packed day of festivities for the entire family on Saturday.
Heart and Soul Massage Therapy Day Spa Office Manager Debbie Fasenmyer said she came up with the idea of holding an annual Family Health and Safety Fair four years ago because she wanted to offer something free to the community to bring attention to programs and non-profit organizations.
She said when she came up with the idea four years ago, she approached the Cape Coral Wellness Center to host the event because they have worked with Lee Memorial in the past during other events. Fasenmyer said they agreed and thought it was a great idea.
“We wanted to offer a family event for kids through seniors,” Fasenmyer said.
Each year the fair honors a different group of people. This year U.S. troops and veterans will be honored during the fair.
She said they are collecting supplies for the troops, so Lee Memorial Health Systems Military Support can continue to send care packages to those overseas, along with providing veterans without a home an extra hand. Since May 2003, 33,000 pounds of care packages have been sent to the troops.
Those who attend the fair are asked to donate supplies for the troops and homeless veterans. Those supplies include canned food, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, lip balm, small tarps and blankets, movie DVDs, paper towels, bug spray, beef jerky, toilet paper, dark or camo baseball caps, camo socks, sewing kits, pop top snack food, blank Christmas cards, foot lotion, powder and rain ponchos.
Those who attend the fair can also sign Christmas cards that will be sent to the troops. She said people can either bring Christmas cards with them or fill out cards that will be available during the fair.
Various safety departments will be attending the event with their vehicles for everyone to view. The Cape Coral Police and Fire Departments, Lee County Sheriff’s Department, Lee County EMS, Cape Coral Police Department K-9 unit, McGruff the Crime Dog and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Coasty, which is an educational tug boat talking remote control that teachers individuals about water safety, will all be on hand.
The fair will also feature 25 tables from various organizations to hand out information. She said the live demos and free tests, along with kids craft tables will also be held inside of the Wellness Center on the basketball courts.
Live performances and live music will also be present at the annual fair. Some of the other venues that will be at the fair include the Blood Mobile, hearing and blood pressure checks, along with the Lee County Elections Department to encourage voter registration. Free fingerprinting for the children will also be offered.
Everyone who attends the event will be given an entry form to win prizes. She said the entry form is free and provided to everyone who attends the event, so “each person is given a fair chance” to win a prize.
Fasenmyer said the winner will not be pulled and announced until the end of the day after everyone has gone through the fair.
The prizes include a gift basket valued at more than $100, gift certificates, along with various gifts that were donated.
She said the fair, which is open to everyone, is a good way to help the community.
The fair will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral, which is located behind the Cape Coral Hospital.
