Man charged for involvement with liquor store thefts
A man remained in jail Tuesday after he reportedly admitted to police that he participated in several liquor store thefts, including one in Cape Coral.
Sidney Douglas, 19, of 10100 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers, faces one count each of resist property recovery retail merchant or farmer and petit larceny property $100 to under $300, and four counts of larceny theft $300 or more but less than $5,000, according to jail booking records.
He is being held at the Lee County Jail on $32,500 bond.
On Sept. 25, Cape police responded to a theft at the Publix at 127 Cape Coral Parkway East. The store clerk told officers that three women and a man had entered the store, grabbed 27 bottles of liquor from the shelves and ran out. The stolen liquor was valued at more than $1,100.
On Sept. 30, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to Total Wine & More, at 13711 S. Tamiami Trail in Fort Myers, for a robbery. Authorities located three people who were allegedly involved, Douglas and two women. Douglas reportedly admitted to the Publix theft and other liquor thefts.
As per store policy, officials at Publix and Total Wine & More reported that they could not comment Tuesday on the incidents or the arrest of Douglas.
“The investigation is continuing and additional charges/arrests may be forthcoming,” Connie Barron, spokeswoman for the Cape police, said in a prepared statement.
Douglas has a court date set for Nov. 1, according to jail booking records.
