By Staff

John Biffar of Cape Coral blew away the field Sunday to win the seventh annual Gasparilla Island 5K Run in a time of 16.22.
Race day dawned cool and comfortable with a beautiful clear, bright sunrise for the runners and well-wishers to enjoy.
A total of 217 runners participated this year or 23 percent more compared with 176 in 2009.
Biffar was the first runner to cross the finish line and no other runners were in sight when he did. His 5:17 per mile pace is a better than a minute faster than the winning time a year ago.
For females, 46-year-old Bethany Heslam posted a 20:27.1 on a 6:30-per mile pace to win the 5K overall crown.
In the 10K, 43-year-old Reenee Jeffries finished in 47:39.2 on a 7:41-per-mile pace to take overall honors for females.
Douglas Morton, 38, won the overall 10K title in a time of 34:03.1 or 5:30 per mile. Also notable, Masters winner Perry Small won the 50-up category in 35:20.8 or 5:42 per mile.
Cole Morgan, an 8-year-old 5K runner, was the youngest competitor. He finished fourth in the 14-under category in a time of 27:43 running 8:56 miles.
Richard Plager, 82, was the most senior runner to compete. He finished the 5K in 47:15.8 by running 15:15 miles.
