9-11 Remembrance Day Blood drive scheduled
The Lee Memorial Blood Center Bloodmobiles will be in two different places on Sept. 11 for a Day of Remembrance Blood Drive to honor those who died nine years ago.
Donor Recruiter for Lee Memorial Health System Gloria Bonventre said they tried a similar event last year at Sam’s Club, but since 9-11 fell on a Friday it really did not go well.
“This year we are trying to piggy back on other things that are going on,” she said.
She said they chose to place two bloodmobile’s in the community on 9-11 because when you donate blood, you’re giving life to someone else.
Lee Memorial uses more than 500 units of blood every week, Bonventre said, adding that the need for blood remains constant.
She said approximately 40 percent of population can donate their blood, but only 5 percent actually do.
“Donating blood is a selfless act that makes a real difference in the life of others,” she said.
Harley Davidson will have a bloodmobile for their “Biker, Blues and Barbeque” Day of Remembrance event. The event, which will take place from noon until 5 p.m., will kick off with a bike run in the morning.
There will be a heroes tribute from noon to 1 p.m., a rib cook off from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and raffles and live music.
Harley Davidson is located at 2160 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.
The second bloodmobile will be located at the Lehigh Acres Wal-Mart, Wal-2523 Lee Blvd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Free T-shirts will be provided at both locations for those who donate blood. For information call (239) 343-2333.
