Motorcyclist injured in July 26 accident recovering

By Staff

A man from Germany remained hospitalized Tuesday after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a moving vehicle about one week ago in Cape Coral.
Hans-Werner Hey, 48, was listed in fair condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, according to hospital officials. Hey was airlifted to the medical facility after he sustained severe trauma to his head and leg in the July 26 accident.
His injuries were initially listed as serious but not life-threatening.
According to police, Hey was riding a 2010 Harley Davidson north on Chiquita Boulevard South in the outside lane when a 2002 Jeep crossed into his path in the 4900 block at about 2 p.m. Hey attempted to avoid the Jeep, but the vehicle struck the left side of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was knocked to the ground and came to rest against the curb at the intersection of Southwest 40th Street and Chiquita, according to officials. Hey came to rest on the sidewalk. The driver of the Jeep, Donna L. Strong, 61, of 1403 S.W. 49th St., sustained no injuries in the accident.
Strong reportedly exited a nearby parking lot and headed east across the southbound lanes of Chiquita. Witnesses told police that when Strong entered the median, she did not stop. Strong continued across the northbound lanes and into the path of the motorcycle.
Strong told police that “she never saw the motorcycle until the vehicles collided in the intersection,” according to a police report.
Officers collected a blood sample from Strong to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash; the results are pending. The case remains under investigation.
Officials reported Hey is a German tourist.
