Registration opens for Kid’s All American Fishing Derby

By Staff

The Cape Coral Yacht Club is hosting the eighth annual Kid’s All American Fishing Derby next weekend.
Each year the derby brings more than 100 local children together to catch fish in the Caloosahatchee River from the Yacht Club Pier. Trophies are later given to children in four categories – Fist Fish, Largest, Smallest and the Most Fish.
“It’s a good time for the kids to come out and hopefully catch some fish,” said Mark Hunter, a city recreational specialist.
Sixty children, ages 5-15, have already pre-registered for the event.
An $8 entrance fee includes two hours of fishing, contests, certificates, a goodie bag and lunch. Participants must bring their own fishing rod and tackle.
Fishing experts from West Marine spend the morning with the children providing them with tips and information on angling, and local Captain George Howell is also providing an education on the art of fishing.
KC’s Riverstop Restaurant and Captain Rob’s Bait and Tackle are donating fishing bait, and Sal’s Pizza is providing lunch for the participants.
The derby officially kicks-off at 8 a.m., but officials are checking in children at 7:30 a.m. so the action can start early.
Because of the upcoming summer heat, the fishing will end at approximately 10:30 a.m.
