North Fort Myers Relay For Life this weekend

By Staff

Relay For Life is an 18-hour long event, with numerous activities, entertainment and ceremonies designed to bring awareness to cancer, and raise funds.
In North Fort Myers, the community event will take place this Friday, May 14, starting at 6 p.m., and end Saturday, May 15, at noon at J. Colin English Elementary School.
Many teams have committed to have at least one member on a track through entire event, while the rest of the team members have activities and fund raisers for supporters. There are community business teams, school-based teams, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office teams and one from the North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce.
“We will also have bounce houses, activities, games and prizes for children,” said American Cancer Society coordinator Nickole Hendra. “There will also be live bands, a DJ and karaoke, along with food, crafts and games.
She said members of the North Fort Myers community have really embraced the event.
J. Colin English Elementary Principal Joe Williams III agreed, adding that especially applies to local teachers.
“We are happy to have the event here. We have a big group of teachers who wanted to be part of cancer awareness, get involved and be whole heartedly behind the movement.”
Teacher Suzanne Roberts is one of them, and said she is looking forward to the event.
“We are inviting everyone to stop by and see our team. We have a lot planned.”
Other local school personnel are participating as well.
The traditional Survivor’s Walk kicks off the event Friday at 6 p.m, where cancer survivors and caregivers will take the first lap.
“There will also be a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. Friday night,” Hendra said. “That is to honor and memorialize those with cancer.”
Something new this year is a planned — garage sale set for Saturday, May 15, beginning at 6 a.m. Henrda is now seeking more individuals and vendors to bring their wares that day.
Spaces are available for a $25 donation, and the proceeds will go from space sales to the NFM Relay For Life.
To set up a spot, call Henrda directly at 292-9360.
“We want the public to come out both Friday and Saturday, but if they miss Friday, we’d like as many people as possible to come Saturday morning. That’s the reason for the garage sale.”
You can come to the event anytime over the 18-hour period. “Pop in and join the excitement,” she said.
J. Colin English Elementary School is at 120 Pine Island Rd. For information on the event call the American Cancer Society at 936-1113 ext. 3904. For information or to sign up for the garage sale, call 292-9360.
