Cape Relay for Life team to host garage sale to benefit cause

By Staff

The Cape Coral Relay For Life will host a Community Garage Sale from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Oasis Charter School to raise money and awareness for the 2010 Relay for Life event.
Robert Bennetts is on the 2010 Cape Coral Relay for Life committee and a member of Parks and Wreckers, one of the many Relay for Life teams across Florida. He said this is the first year they have held the garage sale.
“We are hosting this garage sale in hopes of raising money as well as awareness for the 2010 Cape Coral Relay for Life,” Bennetts said.
He said the money his team makes during the garage sale will go toward its fund-raising goal of $2,500.
“We have also opened this event to any and all other Relay for Life teams for free if they are willing to come sell their items and put all of their profits toward their teams goal,” Bennetts said. “This is a great opportunity for the teams to reach their goal.”
Those who want to participate in the garage sale, but are not on a Relay for Life team, have the opportunity to come and sell their items in an 18-square-foot area, which is the same as two average parking spots.
“We opened this event to the public for a small donation of $20,” he said.
As of Thursday afternoon, Parks and Wreckers had 18 registered sellers for the garage sale, which includes Relay for Life teams and private individuals.
Bennetts said the garage sale will feature everything, from movies to furniture to workout equipment.
What the teams do not sell during the garage sale they will donate to Goodwill, he said.
Some of the teams participating in the garage sale include Treasures of the Cape from Oasis Charter Elementary, Builders of Hope from Balfour Beaty Construction, FCS Kickers from the Florida Cancer Specialists, Cape Coral Hospital Crusaders from Cape Coral Hospital and Team GE from G.E. Corporate.
“This is our first major event,” Bennetts said. “We are hoping we will receive a good turnout.”
Oasis Charter School is located at 3415 Oasis Blvd.

The 2010 Relay for Life event will be held from 6 p.m. April 23 to midnight April 24.
