In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center held the 13th annual Brushstrokes From The Soul Alzheimer’s art show. The art show featured paintings by individuals experiencing the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease or other memory impairment as well as a special selection of art created by caregivers at support group meetings.
A reception with a silent auction of the framed art was held on Nov. 10 at Robb & Stucky Interiors, 13170 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers.
The annual awareness event was sponsored by Gulf Coast Village, the 2009 Grand Sponsor of the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center. Corporate and business sponsors who contributed to the Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center’s annual fund raising campaign were also recognized at the art show.
“This at show is an important event for our center and the community. Each year this event becomes even more important than the last as we come together to help us raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on individuals and families,” said Dotty St. Amand, executive director of the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center in a prepared statement. “Art therapy offers a way for individuals to express themselves when words are no longer there. This project truly illustrates the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words.”
The event netted more than $15,500, including $4,000 from the art silent auction. All funds raised to benefit the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center are used to provide services in the local Lee County area.
Alzheimer’s disease affects approximately 5 million Americans and over 22,000 Lee County residents.
