The first Feline Fun Fair, hosted by the Cape Dog Bakery & Cat House and the Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department, will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Four Freedoms Park.
Cape Dog Bakery & Cat House owners Lou and Anita Simmons began hosting LabFest four years ago to help raise awareness, along with funds, for the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida.
After the Cat House was added to the Cape Dog Bakery, the Simmons began a foster program with Lee County Domestic Animal Services.
Anita Simmons said they currently have two kittens, which were from a litter of three, that they are trying to adopt out.
“Having a cat event was only natural,” she said in a prepared statement. “We’ve also been working with the CFA Breed Assist Program with the local Platinum Coast Cat Fanciers Association. The group did not have a cat show this summer so we wanted to provide a venue to highlight cats.”
Simmons said she always attended the Platinum Coast Cat Fanciers Association meetings. The association usually holds a cat show every year during the summer, but this year the economy restricted it from holding the event.
Simmons said the association wanted to get its name out there, so individuals would know that it is a cat adoption venue.
She said that in addition to having a place for breeders to sell their cats, she also wants the Feline Fun Fair to educate individuals about the importance of making sure pets are spayed or neutered, due to the number of kittens and cats already in need of a home.
The fair will have rescue groups, breeders, vendor exhibits and seminars for cat lovers.
Simmons said some of the rescue groups include the Gulf Coast Humans Society, Pine Island Animal Rescue, H.O.P.E. Lee County and ARC Animal Refuge Center.
The seminars will include various tips on how to care for a cat, including how to declaw, groom and provide nutrition.
Simmons said there will be at least eight adoption groups with approximately 20-25 kittens and cats. She encourages individuals to come to these types of events to purchase a cat instead of buying one from a pet store.
A donation of dry cat food for the Lee County Save the Pet Alliance Donation Center will be accepted during the fair, but is not required to attend the event.
Simmons said the free event is something the whole family can enjoy, along with having the opportunity to learn new information about cats.
