Whether it was the holiday weekend, the first big day of college football, or merely the threat of rain, the opportunity to vote early drew few people to the polls on Saturday.
At 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, only 106 people had voted for Cape offices, and 62 for the city races in Fort Myers, according to the county office of elections.
A representative for the office of elections said voters had been trickling into the polls, but most of the action had come early when the polls opened at 9 a.m.
The same person, who wished to remain unnamed due to office policy, said that given all the circumstances of the holiday weekend, they had received more voters than they had expected.
At the Cape Coral Branch office on SE 9th Pl., only a handful of people came in to vote during the lunch hour.
Standing outside the branch office was Mayoral candidate John Sullivan, and District 6 city council candidate John Cataldi Jr.
There were a few supporters on hand to reinforce the mayoral hopeful, though none of the Sullivan’s fans wanted to go on the record about the exact nature of casting their ballots.
After handing out a few signs, John Cataldi Jr. left after he had voted.
There are 94,097 registered voters in Cape Coral.
The mayoral race offers five candidates, the incumbent James Burch, and challengers Roger Butler, Stephen Lovejoy, Robert Pizzolongo, and John Sullivan.
In District six, Cataldi Jr. faces Frank Antos Jr. and Kevin McGrail.
Early voting is available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Polls are not open on Sunday.
