Cape man dies from injuries suffered in rollover crash
A 27-year old-Cape Coral man died Wednesday after the vehicle in which he was riding rolled over and pinned him beneath the car.
Shawn M. Hough, of 1928 S.E. 1st Street, died from his injuries at Lee Memorial Hospital following the 10:52 p.m. crash in the 1200 block of Santa Barbara Boulevard South.
The driver of the car, Andrew Worner Curl, 26, of 1008 N.E. 9th Street, also was taken to Lee Memorial. Officials described his injuries as “minor.”
Curl’s blood alcohol level was .257, more than three times the legal limit, officials said.
A traffic homicide investigation is under way, and charges are pending, according to Cape Coral police.
Curl was driving northbound on Santa Barbara Boulevard in the outside lane when he reportedly swerved to the right and struck the curb. The vehicle, a 1999 Dodge Avenger, veered left and began to rotate counterclockwise. The Dodge traveled through the median and across the southbound lanes of Santa Barbara, then off the roadway and into the front yard of a residence at 1236 Santa Barbara Blvd.
The vehicle rolled over toward the passenger side, ejecting Hough, who was not wearing a seatbelt. Hough landed at the front door of the residence and was pinned under the vehicle, which had continued to roll through the yard.
The two youths were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where Hough died at 1:10 a.m. He is the city’s fifth traffic fatality in 2009.
