Florida Gulf Coast University athletics

Florida Gulf Coast University, located in Fort Myers, features an up-and-coming athletic program. The Eagles gained membership to the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2006 and began competing at Division I in the 2007-08 academic year.

The Eagles will be eligible for postseason play beginning in the 2009-10 academic year, after a two-year transition.

FGCU currently does not have a football program. Their athletic teams include baseball, men’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, softball, volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving and women’s tennis.

The FGCU women’s basketball team went 36-1 in 2006-07, losing in the Division II national championship game to Southern Connecticut State.

In their first season competing in Division I, the women’s basketball team went 22-9. They defeated South Florida in the opening game of the WNIT before losing to Florida in the second round. The Eagles went 26-5 in 2008-09 and again reached the WNIT.

The FGCU softball team posted a 47-9 record in 2009, including a 15-5 mark in the A-Sun conference. The FGCU baseball team won its second consecutive A-Sun regular-season title.

FGCU plays its basketball games at Alico Arena and its baseball games at Swanson Stadium.
