North Fort Myers Fire officials part of Arson Awareness Week

By Staff

Captain Daryl Burton

North Fort Myers Fire District officials will be participating in an arson awareness event together with the Lee County Fire-Arson Task Force at Miramar Outlet Mall on May 9.
The event is part of Arson Awareness Week. This year’s theme is Arson for Profit.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Our local fire investigator, Capt. Daryl Burton will attend,” said Mary Havener, public education officer for the North Fort Myers Fire District. “He will be available to answer any questions pertaining to the crime of arson.”
According to Burton, even with the downturn in the economy, there hasn’t been a significant increase in suspicious fires in North Fort Myers.
“Arson is not a victimless crime,” Burton said. “Everyone is affected by arson which results in increased insurance rates and endangers countless lives.”
Lee County has an eight-week Juvenile Fire-setters program to address the problem of children with a tendency to play with fires. In the last 12 months, there have been five children that have successfully completed this program. “Some of these youngsters have started brush fires that could have potentially destroyed many acres of woodland along with the homes and property of innocent families,” said Burton.
“Please attempt to attend the Arson Awareness event on Saturday,” said Havener. “If you have any concerns or questions about suspicious fires in your neighborhood, feel free to contact Capt. Burton at 997-8654.”
