Lee schools honored as a top Reading First district

By Staff

The School District of Lee County is among 13 districts recognized for Reading First accomplishments.
At the sixth-year of Reading First implementation level, 17 Lee County schools are in the top 25 percent. At the fourth-year of Reading First implementation level, six Lee County schools are in the top 25 percent.
The Just Read, Florida! office recognized 13 school districts for being in the top 25 percent of all Reading First districts in the state. Lee County School District is one of these top performing districts due to the increased percentage of students reading at or above grade level and the reduction in the percentage of students with serious reading difficulties at an exceptional rate, district officials said in a prepared statement released today.
For these accomplishments, district officials have been invited to the What’s Working in Reading dinner reception as part of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! being held in Tallahassee. Staff will have the opportunity to meet with Commissioner of Education Eric Smith and the State Board of Education and celebrate the Reading First success.
Reading First is designed to assist Florida school districts and schools with the implementation of proven methods of scientifically-based reading instruction in classrooms in order to prevent reading difficulties in grades K-3.
