A bicyclist was struck and killed in south Cape Coral when he rode into the path of an oncoming car Saturday, officials reported.
Timmy D. Howd, 46, a homeless man, rode his bicycle southbound on Palm Tree Boulevard, crossing into the path of a car traveling eastbound on Cape Coral Parkway at about 7:30 p.m., according to police reports.
Howd was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when he was struck by a silver Toyota driven by Andrea H. Bright, 20, who witnesses said had a green light and the right of way.
Bright was traveling approximately 35 miles per hour when she struck Howd, ejecting Howd from his bicycle.
Howd was taken to the Cape Coral Hospital with life threatening injuries. He later died, said city spokesperson Connie Barron.
Howd was carrying a beer can when he was struck, which was thrown into the headlight of another eastbound driver, Eric Dayton, reports state.
Neither driver was injured in the crash, according to reports.
Howd is the 15th traffic fatality of 2008 in Cape Coral, and the sixth known DUI-related death. There were 13 traffic fatalities in the city in 2007, officials reported.
