A 44-year-old man riding a Mongoose bicycle was killed when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Cape Coral Parkway and Palm Tree Boulevard Saturday night.
Timmy D. Howd died after his bicycle was hit by a silver Toyota driven by Andrea H. Bright, 20, of Northwest 22nd Street, officials said. The accident occurred at 6:30 p.m.
Howd, who police say was homeless, was southbound on Palm Tree Boulevard and was riding across Cape Coral Parkway when Bright’s vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Cape Coral Parkway, struck Howd’s bicycle near the crosswalk. Witnesses indicated that Bright had the green light and right of way when Howd rode into the intersection and into the path of Bright’s vehicle, police said. Howd was ejected from the bicycle and skidded along the pavement of the eastbound lanes of Cape Coral Parkway. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Cape Coral Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.
Next of kin has been notified.
A beer can that Howd was carrying flew into the headlight of a third vehicle driven by Eric A. Dayton, 20, of Southwest 51st Terrace, who was traveling westbound on Cape Coral Parkway at the time of the accident. Dayton also was driving through the intersection under a green light.
Updated traffic numbers indicate that Howd may be the 14th traffic fatality this year on Cape Coral roadways. This number will be verified this morning, officials said. In 2007, there were 13 traffic deaths within the city of Cape Coral.
