Much like its successful summer programs, the Cape Coral’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering programs for the kids during the winter break from school.
“Winter Wonderland” offers kids from kindergarten through ninth grade the opportunity to keep busy during the doldrums of the vacation weeks with arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, guest speakers, field trips and more.
Parks and Rec “fun experts” keep kids busy all day long with rotating themes that bring something new each day for the participants.
“Each day we have a theme,” recreation specialist Robbie Goff said Monday. “Today is city day with each room is set up around a different city. For instance, there’s an Orlando room with Disney trivia, and a Key West room that features island crafts.”
A quick sampling of other days include: a field trip day today, where participants get out and about to experience various kinds of adventure. Fridays are mystery days, when the kids have to solve a fun adventure and win prizes.
Goff said the programs mostly attract elementary and middle school kids, though the programs can be tailored to older kids if necessary.
Prices for the two-week program are as follows: week one is $59 for the first child and $49 for each additional child. Week two is $78 for the first child and $68 for each additional child.
There is still time and room available for those who want to sign their kids up for the program.
Monday’s program had between 45 and 50 kids. Goff said the economy is definitely having an impact on the program.
“Typically we’ve had more kids but because of the economy people are hurting and its not filling up like it used to,” he said.
The first week of the program started Monday and runs until Friday. The second week will run from Monday-Jan. 2, with no program on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
