Police: Cape teen dies after being accidentally shot

By Staff

A teen who was shot in the head at a Cape Coral home died as a result of his injuries late Monday, and the father of a 12-year-old boy who may have been involved in the shooting was charged in the incident.
Colton Hutchinson, 14, was at a Cape Coral home owned by David Michael Casman, 49, at 2422 S.E. 28th St., at around 1:04 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron.
Neighbors say Casman lives with his three children and wife at the two-story waterfront home which, according to Lee County property records, is valued at approximately $1.2 million.
Police are calling the shooting accidental. Though the 12-year-old called 911 and told dispatchers two individuals with ski masks entered the home and shot Colton, a police investigation has determined the shooting was likely an accident and that the 12-year-old was involved, Barron said.
The 12-year-old is not being identified by police at this time.
Colton was taken to the Cape Coral Hospital in life threatening condition Monday afternoon and was later pronounced dead, she said.
Casman was arrested and charged Monday with culpable negligence, a third-degree felony, because firearms in the home were not properly secured.
Karin Webber, a neighbor on a nearby street, said she didn’t know the family but believed what happened was an isolated incident.
“It’s a quiet place here,” Webber said. “I’m very surprised that this happened.”
“This is a pretty safe neighborhood,” said another neighbor, who requested not to be identified.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, Barron said.
