Youth involved in ‘hood surfing’ accident dies

By Staff

The 16-year-old passenger involved in the “hood surfing” accident Wednesday, Nov. 19, has died from the injuries received when he fell from the 1998 Toyota Camry, driven by Tyler Steven Charles Edge, 18.

Justin Michael Brantley, 16, was pronounced deceased at 9:50 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, by Lee Memorial Hospital officials. His family removed him from life support today.

Brantley of 2025 N.E. 2nd Ave. had hopped in the trunk of a 1998 Toyota Camry with 17-year-old Justin Wright of 309 N.E. 20th Terrace, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron.

Edge, 18, of 331 N.E. 20th St., was the driver of the car when the accident occurred at about 4:14 p.m., Barron said.

Edge backed out of the driveway at Brantley’s home, then began driving forward with the two passengers, Barron said.

Edge reportedly told police he saw Wright exit the back of the vehicle and Brantley appeared to have exited as well. He then drove south on Northeast 2nd Avenue and turned onto Northeast 21st Terrace, but stopped when he heard Wright screaming.

Brantley was lying unconscious in the road, Barron said. He was trauma-alerted by ambulance to the Lee Memorial Hospital, she said.

Police investigators reported they did not discover signs of impairment in the accident and no charges are pending at this time.
