Big airs, intricate tricks and a few falls were on display Saturday as more than 60 skateboarders participated in the Eagle Skate Park competition.

Skaters ages 7 to 16 each got two runs of one minute each to show off their skills for the judges, who used originality, difficulty, flow, use of ramps and trick combinations as their criteria to form a score ranging from one to 10, with 10 being the highest.

Jaime Dellacosta, 12, kicked off the competition with his run, ending it by using a ramp to jump over a picnic table. The Trafalgar Middle School student earned a modest rating despite finishing second in his age group.

“Not too good, but maybe next turn I can do a little better,” Dellacosta said of his first run.

Coby Palmer, a recreation specialist with the city of Cape Coral, said the competition promotes the park’s lessons.

“This is a springboard to get kids in the lessons we offer,” Palmer said, adding that beginning sessions teach skateboarders basic tricks, maneuvering and how to fall without getting hurt. “The competition just makes it a ton of fun.”

The skate competitions have been going on for about a year, Palmer said, and they are held every other month. This time, participants competed for free admission to the Eagle Skate Park for the month of September.

Austin O’Brien edged out Dellacosta 8.85 to 8.26 to take the 10- to 12-year-old age group. Steve Dowling took the top spot in the 13- to 15-year-old age group with an 8.7 score, and Logan McFarlane narrowly beat out David Bruce with a score of 8.65 to 8.60 to take the 16 and up category.
