Shops at Surfside to host Breast Cancer Benefit for family; Wife, mom faces stage 4 lymphona

By Staff

A Breast Cancer Benefit on Saturday at the Shops at Surfside will benefit a Cape Coral family whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Christina Coyle and her husband, Mike, who have been married for 10 years, were told last year that Christina had been diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma — a cancer that occurs in 5 percent of the U.S. population by attacking the body’s immune system.

Since she was diagnosed after Thanksgiving, she has been ill from the extensive chemotherapy required to combat the rare form of cancer, said Peggy Newlan, a family friend. Soon Christina will have to go to Nebraska to receive a bone marrow transplant, which will take more than 12 weeks.

“She will be quarantined from her family for four of the 12 weeks because they bring her immune system down,” said Newlan.

In order to aid the family during Christina’s stay in Nebraska, where she will be away from her husband and 5-year-old son, local businesses and residents have organized the benefit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the proceeds will benefit the family.

During the benefit, Ooh La La Salon and Ron’s Barbershop will offer haircuts for a minimum donation of $10. Besides the haircuts they have also organized a 50/50 auction. Tickets for the auction are available at Ooh La La, at 415 Cape Coral Parkway W.

Another local business, Venus Medspa, is offering chair massages and Botox injections to attendees at the benefit. They are also holding a raffle where the prizes include a juvederm filler, lipodissolve treatment, laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, medical grade facials, one-hour massages and ionic detoxes. Those $10 raffle tickets can be purchased by calling 540-FACE.

Refreshments will be provided by Starbucks Coffee. There will also be a barbecue lunch from Mixers Grille, Italian ice by the Ice Cream Club, a bake sale and performance by Tropical Twisters Gymnastics, Pepsi products and demonstrations by Martial Arts Excel.

Other activities include a bounce house for children, makeovers from Belk department store and a silent auction for various theme baskets donated by local vendors.
