Useppa Island
On Useppa, visitors can literally walk back into its early history.

It once was the center of fishing, which bagan in the early 1900s. But its roots go back further. Cubans used Useppa as a major fishing base and the Calusa Indians go back further than that.

Useppa is perhaps best known for the exploits of entrepreneur Barron Collier, who amassed a fortune in advertising. He bought the land in 1908 and in 1912 built a big white mansion, which exists today as the Collier Inn.

Although the island itself was primitive and inaccessible, it was primarily known for its many luxuries. Fishermen on Useppa also pioneered the modern catch-and-release technique for tarpon fishing.

There are a few private homes on the island today, but is the inn, its grounds and the restaurant's cuisine that continues to draw in visitors today. For more information, call the Useppa Island Club at 239.283.1061.
