Cayo Costa
Ever longed to wade in blue waters or stroll for miles on a white unspoiled beach of a deserted island? You don't have to hop aboard a tramp steamer because the answer lies just a short ferry ride to one of Southwest Florida's barrier islands — Cayo Costa.

Located to the north of North Captiva, the island has just a smattering of residential dwellings, no roads, no powerlines and no shopping centers. What it does have in abundance, however, is a peace and serenity that only a natural environment such as this can offer. Six miles of hiking trails take you through acres of pine forests, oak and palm hammocks, and mangrove swamps where many species of birds and wildlife make their homes. Among them are herds of wild hogs which can be seen rooting up the soft soil for the forest floor.

Visitors can also swim, sunbathe, fish, camp or participate in one of the programs offered by state employees that cover topics as varied as sea turtles and the Calusa Indians who once occupied the island.

There are 35 primitive sites to pitch a tent, as well as 6 rustic cabins. Reminiscent of those found in places like the mountains up north, these cabins have no electricity and, thus, no heat or air conditioning. Likewise, the showers run only cold water and are shared in the camping areas along with restrooms, picnic tables and grills. Be sure to take all of the supplies you'll need.

The Tropic Star of Pine Island offers ferry service twice daily from Bokeelia. Call them at 239-283-0015 to book passage.
