Shell Factory to host hurricane seminar May 20

May 15, 2019
By CHUCK BALLARO (news@breezenewspapers.com) , FL Guide

The 2019 hurricane season begins June 1 and, even if it turns out to be a light one, it only takes one storm for it to become a bad season very fast.

That means it's time to plan and have a plan in place. A second comprehensive hurricane seminar is being offered by the Shell Factory at 2887 N. Tamiami Trail, on Monday, May 20, at 10 a.m. The Shell Factory traditionally holds two such seminars per year, the first being in March.

The program will feature John Patrick, chief meteorologist with ABC-7, who was also the feature speaker at the earlier seminar. Representatives from various emergency-related agencies also will be presenters.

The two seminars held at the Shell Factory in 2018 were jam-packed, as they occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

No hurricanes hit Southwest Florida that year, and that could have resulted in the sparse crowd for the first seminar in this March.

But residents should not be complacent, officials warned.

The program will provide an emphasis on preparation for the hurricane season and recovery procedures should we have a hurricane. Past forums have encouraged families to put together a plan, get the supplies you need for it, and practice the plan.

The program, being held in the Dolphin Room, is free to the public. Parking is also free. Pre-registration is not required.

Participants will be offered free Nature Park passes for the family and door prizes. Hurricane-related businesses will have table displays that feature hurricane preparedness items.

Speakers will cover topics such as what a hurricane is, when to evacuate, flood damage and storm surge, shelters, how to protect your home, how to prepare a hurricane kit, what happens after a hurricane, insurance needs, and how to find relief assistance.

Participants will be provided with a variety of printed materials which will be valuable in preparing for a hurricane.

Hurricane season is in effect from June 1 until Nov. 30.

Additional information about the hurricane seminar may be obtained by contacting Chris Forbes, director of sales at the Shell Factory, Christine@ShellFactory.com, or 246-6364.
