We knew it. The rest of America is on a learning curve.
In its April 2015 issue, FamilyFun magazine announced Sanibel as the "Number One Top Tourist Town in the Country" and the overall "Number One Family Tourist Attraction" winner across all categories and regions. A survey given to traveling families provided the answers. Some 2,000 responded. The FamilyFun recommendations covered varied interests and locations, including animal attractions, state parks, and science museums. Sanibel in the survey topped the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, and the town of Savannah, Georgia, for the most coveted prize of "Favorite U.S. Family Friendly Vacation Destination."
"We are absolutely delighted that Sanibel Island was chosen by American families as their most favorite of all vacation destinations in the U.S. " Sanibel and Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce president Ric Base said. "We have always treasured our family visitors and this is the greatest compliment that they could pay us."
The recognition also got some play on national TV.
NBC's Today show on May 7 featured a sidebar on Sanibel, with the show's hosts answering trivia about the island. The premise was for Today hosts Katie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb to guess the country's top tourist attraction - Sanibel.
To further goose the Today segment, the Sanibel and Captiva chambers of commerce forwarded to the show's producers clues like junonia shells, flip-flops, sunglasses, Sun Harvest orange juice, champagne. The trivia package includes an image of Katie Lee and Hoda posed on cabana chairs, backdropped by ocean and palm trees, the words "Sanibel Island" emblazoned on the picture frame. A FamilyFun editor will pose the trivia in the Today segment.
Today show producers and FamilyFun editors engaged in the May 7 promotional segment "loved it," said Blanaid Colley, a spokeswoman for the Sanibel and Captiva chamber. "We also think it will help promote Sanibel (and Captiva) as a great summer vacation location.
