Scale Rails of Southwest Florida will offer free seminars on Saturdays at the group’s clubhouse, known as The Depot.

With proceeds from their annual Holiday Train Show each year at Thanksgiving, local model train enthusiasts and masters in the art give free model train clinics from January through April.

“We were very successful this year raising funds for these free events through our holiday show,” said organizer Jim Edmier. “We appreciated everyone who came, and we invite people with out-of-town guests to visit the depot, even if they do not want to be part of the clinics.”

The clubhouse hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free admission.

The schedule of clinic events include:

* Feb. 4 Scenery “What are we trying to do?”

* Feb. 11 Kit bashing interiors

* Feb. 18 Fast Track Turnouts

* Feb. 25 Back Drops – How to make realistic

* March 3 Finding Prototype Information

* March 10 no clinic

* March 17 Styrene structures

* March 24 Engine tune-ups

* March 31 Layout tours

* April 7 Chasing the Narrow Gauge

* April 14 Sundance Central – Club visit

The clinics start at 10 a.m. and last about two hours.

You don’t have to be a member to attend, but many find themselves joining after. The clinics are conducted by club members, cover many elements of model railroading and are intended to introduce people to some techniques for doing various aspects of modeling.

“Many of our members started train hobbies by attending these clinics,” said the organization’s president Peter Gross.

There are always new tricks and technology, members said, and the clinics are always informative – and free of charge.
