Things to Do in Boca Grande
The Boca Grande Fishing Guides Association has more than 60 professional guides who specialize in all types of fishing. Known by many as the "tarpon Capital of the world," anglers take over Boca Grande in late spring and summer, for some of the best sport fishing around. This title comes from historic major tarpon tournaments, which are usually held between May and July when tarpon migrate to Boca Grande Pass by the thousands. After a disappointing tournament in 2005, the Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce skipped hosting the "World's Richest Tarpon Tournament" in '06. However, guides are still holding their tournament for anglers.

Boca Grande has several marinas open for use by boaters, with facilities for everyone from kayakers to powerboaters.

Golfers are far from forgotten! In Placida, just across the causeway, there is a Tom Fazio-designed course bordered by a 6,000-acre nature preserve and the banks of Coral Creek, a salt-water estuary flowing to the Gulf of Mexico. The Myakka Pines Golf Club, in nearby Englewood, consists of 27 holes divided into three distinctly different courses: red, white and blue. The course is dotted with lakes and is an Audubon Society-designated a bird sanctuary. The Gene Bates-designed Riverwood Golf & Country Club in Port Charlotte is an 18-hole par 72, rated 4-1/2 stars by Golf Digest. Oyster Creek Golf & Country Club, also in Englewood, is a difficult executive course featuring six par 4s with water hazards coming into play on 14 holes.

For those who'd rather just catch some rays and relax, the Gasparilla Island State Park Administration maintains four fabulous beaches. The state park system operates two picnic areas with pavillions for shade and scenic views of the water, with restrooms nearby.

Interestingly, while the lower half of Gasparilla Island — including Boca Grande — is in Lee County, the northern section is part of Charlotte County!
